NEWLYWEDS
A lazy lunch.
I watch two lovers
at a nearby table.
He sits
a light breeze ruffles silver hair.
She stands
steps back
phone in hand
horizontal
and takes his picture.
The biggest smile is
on her face.
His is gentle
as she takes a second.
I cannot hear their private words
so as I leave I beg their pardon
and ask “Are you newlyweds?”
Only partly in jest.
He chuckles.
"Forty-eight years ago
we were."
"Just a couple cute kids
enjoying a beautiful day!"
I say.
"Enjoying life."
She says
with a wink
in her voice.
"That’s what it’s all about!"
Was it always sun and sweetness
for those 48 years?
Maybe. Maybe not.
Do they have
lessons
wisdom
secrets
for us mortals?
Of course
they must.
But everything was said
with the click of a shutter
and the way he slid
his wine
across the table
for her
to taste.
